Philadelphia Eagles signing wide receiver Parris Campbell to one-year deal

Former Ohio State wideout Parris Campbell has reportedly found a new home amid free agency this week. Campbell is signing a new one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. He spent the 2023 season with the New York Giants but his contract expired at the start of the league new year on March 13. Now, he heads to one of his former team’s divisional rivals, where he’ll join former teammate Saquon Barkley.

Last season for New York, Campbell posted 104 yards on 20 receptions while playing in just 12 games. When the Giants made him inactive for a Week 14 matchup against the Packers, the former second-rounder told reporters he was “shocked.” Head coach Brian Daboll said at the time that the team was in need of defenders that week.

“Yeah I definitely was shocked,” Campbell said, via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. “Shoot, I was more so just hurt more than anything… hurt that I know what I put into it each and every week. And to be inactive for the first time in my career was definitely hurtful, was definitely shocking. A lot of different emotions going on, for sure.”

Campbell played one season for the Giants on a $4.7 million contract. That came after four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts selected him No. 59 overall in the second round of the 2019 draft out of Ohio State. His best season for them was in 2022. He played in all 17 games, racking up 623 yards with three touchdowns on 61 receptions. The team let him walk after his rookie deal expired.

So far in his first five seasons, Campbell has 117 catches in 44 games played. He’s tallied five touchdowns and 1,087 yards. He fractured his hand then broke his foot during the 2019 season. In the following season, he had MCL and PCL sprains. Campbell then suffered from abdominal and foot injuries during the 2021 season.

Barkley leaves Giants for Eagles

Running back Saquon Barkley inked a three-year deal out of free agency to leave the New York Giants for the Philadelphia Eagles last week. He’s leaving the Giants for some NFC East rivals on a contract that will pay him up to $37.75 million, with $26 million guaranteed.

The second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Penn State, Saquon Barkley was a dominant force for the New York Giants from the time he entered the league. That included being the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018 and going to two Pro Bowls.

Last season, Saquon Barkley rushed for 962 yards in 14 games with six touchdowns. He also had 41 receptions for 280 yards and four touchdowns.

More on the 2024 NFL offseason, free agency

The NFL 2024 calendar year begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 13. At that time, contracts running through 2023 officially run out, making those players free agents. Prior to the beginning of free agency, teams will have a chance to designate one franchise or transition tag player, starting on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. ET and ending on March 5. Beginning March 11 through March 13 teams can enter into a legal negotiation with players who will become unrestricted free agents.

In addition to NFL free agency, the new year also marks the beginning of all trades being made official by the league office. April 19 marks the deadline to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets. On April 24, the deadline for teams to match restricted free agent offers sheets hits. Following the restricted free agent deadline follows the 2024 NFL Draft, which runs from April 25-27.
