Report: Giants changed their mind on QB plans for 2024 season

The New York Giants have reportedly decided to take a different path at quarterback this offseason than they had initially intended. They are expected to try to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Daniel Jones era is about over

The Giants seem to be done with the Daniel Jones experiment. They signed Drew Lock in free agency to compete with Jones for the starting spot. However, Jones and Lock might not be the QB1 following training camp.

New York has the No. 6 pick in the draft, so they’ll have a chance to take one of the top prospects in this year’s class. Big Blue reportedly had to change their mind on which quarterback they would have an opportunity to select.

The Giants changed their mind at quarterback for 2024

Per John Frascella of Razzball, the Giants planned to take LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels in the draft. But because of his popularity with the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots, they have set their sights on Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy:

“While it’s come out that the Giants are upset someone leaked the J.J. McCarthy story, my source tells me they were even more interested in Jayden Daniels. However, it has become clear to the Giants that Daniels is DEFINITELY going in the top 3 of the NFL Draft thus their attention turned completely to McCarthy.”

Benjamin Allbright of KOA Colorado confirmed Frascella’s report.

Lots of teams are lining up for McCarthy

The Giants might want McCarthy at No. 6, but there is no guarantee he’ll be around when New York has the potential to take him there. The Minnesota Vikings, Las Vegas Raiders, and Denver Broncos are expected to try to trade up for him. The Vikings recently traded for a second first-round pick in the draft, so they could potentially make another trade for a quarterback like McCarthy before the No. 6 pick.

The Arizona Cardinals reportedly have the No. 4 pick up for sale, and the Giants might have to make a move there if they want to draft McCarthy.
